Title: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans arising in a BCG vaccination scar
Abstract:
To the Editor.—
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a slowly growing fibrous sarcoma arising from the dermis, and there are no known precipitating or predisposing factors associated with this tumor.
Report of a Case.—
A 28-year-old man presented with a tumor on the upper part of his left arm arising in the scar of a BCG vaccination performed 15 years previously. One year prior to his presentation, the scar became elevated to form a firm nodule, 8 mm in diameter, and had then enlarged rapidly over the previous month. There was no pain or bleeding. On examination, there was a purplish, firm, nodular tumor in the dermis that was 3 cm in diameter and raised 0.5 cm above the surrounding skin (Fig 1). A biopsy was performed, which showed a cellular tumor of the lower dermis and subcutis in which the cells were arranged in the characteristic cartwheel pattern of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans
