Abstract: Propranolol is the first beta-adrenoreceptor blocker introduced to clinical use that is still routinely used today. Moreover, at present, it is the most widely used beta-adrenoreceptor in the world. It is a nonselective beta-blocker, affecting both beta-1 and beta-2 adrenoreceptors. The potency of this effect serves as a standard against which newer beta-blockers are compared. Propranolol had local anesthetic activity (membrane-stabilizing or quinidine-like effect). It is devoid of intrinsic sympathomimetic activity.
