Abstract: Recently, I have heard colleagues and students alike bemoan the decline of queer theory. Some say that queer theory is no longer in vogue; others characterize it as fatigued or exhausted and lacking in keen debates. Still others wax nostalgic for an earlier moment in the history of Queer Studies in the academy and queer life outside the academy and accuse a new generation of queer theorists and activists of having dropped the ball on the politics of the queer project. These vague rumblings of queer theory and its discontents are accompanied by rumors of certain powerful university presses no longer having faith in queer publications. Is Queer Studies in some kind of decline? In this short chapter I want to take stock quickly of the field by situating Queer Studies within the larger terrain of interdisciplinary studies, locating it in relation to pedagogy and digital media and describing some of the areas of debate within Queer Studies as they have emerged in recent conferences.
