Abstract: Completing his exposition of the progress of codification for structural design in brick or blockwork, the author deals here with the considerations affecting reinforced masonry: Although reinforced masonry has been used since 1825, and although it has long been accepted that its design can be based on the principles used for reinforced concrete, there is a notable lack of detailed guidance on it available worldwide. Now CIB is extending its international recommendations to include reinforced masonry. The base data being used is the advanced British Draft Code BS 5628: Part 2. It is discussed in this article.
