Abstract: For motion in dissipative systems, the phase space volume contracts onto an attractor of lower dimensionality than the original space. Furthermore, as a system parameter changes, the motion on the attractor may change from regular to chaotic. Although our knowledge of chaotic behavior in dissipative systems is by no means complete, the broad features are now clear, and certain techniques to calculate the properties of the motion have emerged.
