Abstract: Smart growth is an urban planning approach that emerged in the late 1990s to prevent sprawl through the management of new development. Smart growth promotes development that is compact, high density, and conserves open space and farmland. Growth that is smart mixes residential, commercial, and institutional land uses and fosters a distinctive sense of place. Neighborhoods provide a range of housing and transportation options, encourage walking, and are serviced by transit. The smart growth policy approach has been adopted throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. A wide range of places and organizations support smart growth in principle, yet implementation is a greater challenge.
