Title: Kinetic study on the reduction of hydroxylamine by V(III)
Abstract: The kinetics of the reduction of hydroxylamine by V(III) have been investigated at different pH values. In the pH range 0–2 the hydroxylamine is reduced at a rate k1[V3+][NH2OH]. The value of k1 at 25°C is 1·8. 103M−1sec−1 and is independent of the ionic strength of the solution; activation parameters are ΔH‡ = 9·2 kcal mol−1 and ΔS‡ = −13 e.m.u.. The kinetic data indicates that the reaction occurs by the attack of V(III) on unprotonated hydroxylamine. At pH higher than 2 the kinetics are complicated by the hydrolysis of V3+.
