Abstract: This chapter unpicks the complexities faced by both academics and participants in attempting to define punk. It destabilises fixed definitions of punk by drawing upon multiple, sometimes conflicting definitions of punk discussed by research participants. Punk is discussed variously as an artistic form, an ideology, an identity and as a set of practices that could be social or individual. This chapter argues that there is space for all of these definitions to coexist, and that recognising this is crucial to developing an academic understanding of 'punk'. Punk is necessarily a contested label.
