Abstract: Abstract This chapter describes the reporting and detection of heresy in general terms across England. The canonical principles of suspicion, accusation, denunciation, and inquisition are described and the role of the laity — the fidedigni — is outlined. The status of various types of evidence, including heretical books, is discussed.
