Abstract: Francesco BuscemiLa Révolution française, 4 | 2013Les pédagogues de la Révolution aspirent à une vulgarisation des savoirs et à l'élaboration d'outils permettant de rendre l'instruction également accessible à tous les citoyens.L'innovation se conjugue avec des transferts et des emprunts pédagogiques comme les catéchismes politiques étudiés par Jean-Charles Buttier.La dimension élémentaire de ces ouvrages justifie pour les auteurs qui continuent d'écrire des catéchismes après 1789 cet emprunt à la catéchèse chrétienne.Pour reprendre la terminologie de l'époque, « l'élémentation » des savoirs devient alors un enjeu primordial et la rédaction de livres élémentaires un souci constant.Pauline Pujo démontre dans son étude des manuels d'histoire que la dimension élémentaire justifie là encore des continuités et des transferts.La question de la pédagogie est à l'origine de débats au sein notamment des assemblées nationales.René Grevet montre de son côté que les élites politiques ont tenté non seulement de construire un système scolaire « révolutionné » mais aussi d'endosser eux-mêmes le rôle de didacticiens.Corinne Doria a ainsi analysé l'importance de la définition de la morale et de son enseignement au fil des différents projets d'éducation présentés devant les députés.La question de la pédagogie révèle aussi des rapports de force entre le peuple et les élites politiques.Alors qu'une pédagogie officielle tend à s'imposer, celle-ci suscite en 1793-1794 des résistances et des tentatives de réappropriation à l'échelle locale comme le souligne Caroline Fayolle.Des institutrices républicaines ont ainsi élaboré une pédagogie active et ouverte sur la cité qui induit en retour de nouvelles pratiques de citoyenneté féminine.Il se produit cependant une progressive normalisation par la mise en place d'institutions de formation des maîtres dont l'exemple le plus célèbre reste l'Ecole normale de l'an III étudiée par Dominique Julia.Elisabeth Liris a montré dans son article sur l'École centrale du Panthéon qu'il s'agit là aussi d'une réalisation scolaire concrète de l'époque révolutionnaire.Dans le même temps, les nombreux « pédagogues de papier », pour reprendre une expression de Jean-Luc Chappey dans son analyse du statut du pédagogue sous le Directoire, ont été disqualifiés en étant rejetés du côté de l'utopie.Carole Christen interroge l'héritage de ces expérimentations et projets de la Révolution dans son article sur les projets d'éducation populaire sous la Restauration et la Monarchie de Juillet.Des projets écartés et des expérimentations inachevées resurgissent après la Révolution et témoignent, pour reprendre une expression de François Hincker, de l'« effet d'utopie de la Révolution française ».Comme le montre Nathalie Brémand, si ces héritages sont rarement revendiqués et explicités, ils nourrissent les conceptions pédagogiques des auteurs socialistes des années 1830-1848 qui réactualisent l'objectif de régénération de la société.
