Abstract: This month the American Dietetic Association’s Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE) takes place in Hawaii. The program is packed with interesting content ranging from research to reef search, and opportunities to learn academically, culturally, and gastronomically abound. Research topics include results from the Dietary Modification Trial of the Women’s Health Initiative, where a summary of the relevant dietary adherence and outcomes will be reviewed by nutrition investigators within the study. Come hear more about the details and discover for yourself the true interpretation of these landmark data and how to convey an accurate message to your students, clients, and patients. Other research topics include what food and nutrition professionals can do about pediatric overweight involving school-based and clinical interventions and the national and international implications of the pediatric overweight epidemic and how best to cope with these realities in your own practice or related business. Also, the results from a systematic, evidence-based review commissioned by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) will be presented and discussed regarding the impact on public health, especially that of children and adolescents. The role of indirect calorimetry in assessing nutritional requirements, especially among critically ill patients, will also be discussed. The opportunity to review these procedures and interpret new findings and how to apply them offers valuable new insights. Likewise, there is a session regarding evidence-based dietetics practice in critical illness and oncology that offers more in-depth practice tips and skill building. The dietary patterns found to reduce cardiovascular risk in the Optimal Macro-Nutrient Intake Heart Trial will be presented with additional focus on the meal plans and lifestyle guidelines that should be valued by all who address the general public and patients at cardiovascular risk. These and countless other research-related sessions will be available this year at FNCE. A focus on America’s eating habits, especially regarding fruit, vegetable, and grain intake, is the theme this month. Dr Lydia Bazzano provides a fascinating overview (p 1364) of the “high cost of not consuming fruits and vegetables” by estimating that by increasing each individual’s intake of these foods, the overall burden of coronary heart disease and stroke could be markedly reduced. The cost benefits and the role of the registered dietitian in helping to achieve these goals are further discussed. Bazzano’s Research Editorial accompanies a paper by Guenther and colleagues (p 1371) reporting from the 1999-2000 NHANES data regarding the inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables by most Americans at all ages. The authors point out that the new recommendations from MyPyramid go beyond the traditional five servings a day from these food groups and will require creative and effective approaches if the public is to attempt to meet these goals. In a similar vein, Su and Arab (p 1394) report results from NHANES III regarding salad consumption and serum nutrient levels among adults. Salad consumers were found to have more favorable intakes of several essential nutrients compared to nonsalad eaters. Meanwhile, in an effort to study new ways to enhance consumption of fruits and vegetables, Richards and colleagues (p 1405) report favorable results of a study assessing the effectiveness of an intervention involving newsletters, computer-based education, and motivational interviewing. Also, VanWormer and colleagues (p 1434) review the subject of telephone-based counseling in enhancing overall dietary quality. Based on results from nine studies that met the inclusion criteria, the authors concluded that the use of telephone-based counseling could be considered an effective approach to complement clinical care, but there are as yet insufficient studies to draw meaningful conclusions. Melanson and colleagues (p 1380) further present results of a weight-loss study documenting the benefits of whole grains on improving dietary quality without compromising weight loss, and Behall and colleagues (p 1445) further report that whole-grain diets reduce blood pressure in mildly hypercholesterolemic men and women. As reported by Schwartz and Byrd-Bredbenner (p 1412), problems with portion distortion among America’s youth no doubt contribute to the obesity problem and raise further awareness regarding the need to re-educate people about what constitutes a reasonable serving. These and numerous other studies offer a wealth of nutrient-rich reading. Finally, in this issue is an expanded and updated list of all of the food and nutrition professionals who participated at some point within the Women’s Health Initiative. The Journal attempted to provide such a list in June 2006, but clearly the contents were limited. This month a more complete list is provided thanks to further input from the principal investigators. We apologize to anyone not included and congratulate one and all. Best regards. The Journal salutes all of the food and nutrition professionals who participated in the Women’s Health Initiative over the past 14 years.
