Abstract: Abstract Appellate courts in the United States are important as they determine whether the law was interpreted and applied correctly by lower trial courts. The United States has a dual court system which means that there are both federal and state appellate court systems. The federal appellate court system consists of the United States Courts of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Most state appellate court systems consist of intermediate appellate courts and a state supreme court. Since the federal appellate court system and each state appellate court system developed independently, appellate courts vary widely. This entry will discuss the varying structures, procedures, and jurisdictions of federal and state appellate courts in the United States, and will also discuss methods of judicial appointment for each of these systems.
