Abstract: This chapter presents the major findings of our study, about the use of and attitudes towards corporal punishment in homes and preschool settings in the Dodoma Urban District, Tanzania, based primarily on interview and questionnaire data with parents and educators. It also presents findings about factors that influence the use of corporal punishment based on our data. Our study shows that corporal punishment is commonly used with young children in our research sites. We additionally elaborate five subthemes related to its use: cultural norms and religious beliefs, psychosocial and demographic factors, teachers’ qualifications and parents’ level of education, past experiences with corporal punishment, and beliefs about the effectiveness of corporal punishment. Finally, the chapter provides findings about attitudes toward, and knowledge of the national and international legal framework related to corporal punishment among parents, teachers, and educational policy makers.
