Abstract: Dopamine receptors have been intensively studied because of their central role in normal brain function and their involvement in a number of central nervous system diseases. Lezcano et al . show that the D1 dopamine receptor interacts with a newly identified transmembrane protein named Calcyon. Ultrastructural analysis reveals a close association between Calcyon and a specific D1 receptor subpopulation. They further show that Calcyon is a potential GTPase that mediates dopamine receptor-coupled signal transduction mechanisms. This finding may shed new light on the function of D1 receptors in the prefrontal cortex of the brain and their involvement in cognition and may also lead to new pharmacological approaches for the treatment of schizophrenia and other cognitive disorders.
