Title: Large Coal-Derived Gas Fields and Their Gas Sources in the Sichuan Basin
Abstract: The Sichuan Basin is the first petroliferous basin with natural gas development in China, and its record of natural gas production, in the process of artificial drilling of salt wells, may be traced back to the Qin and Han dynasties. The basin covers an area of 18.8 × 104 km2, with Sinian to Middle Triassic marine formations and Upper Triassic to Quaternary terrestrial formations. The exploration and development of natural gases in the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation, a major coal-derived gas zone in the Sichuan Basin, began in the 1950s and reached a peak at the beginning of this century. This chapter explores and describes several large gas fields in the Xujiahe Formation, including Bajiaochang, Qiongxi, Guang'an, Hechuan, and Anyue, and a number of large Jurassic gas fields with Xujiahe source rock, such as Xinchang and Luodai.
