Abstract: Abstract Public relations comprises a range of activities conducted by organizational agents (employees or temporary consultants) that are designed to contribute to the effectiveness of the organizations they represent by improving organizational relationships with stakeholders and the media. Although public relations is probably best known for its media relations work, some work is less well‐known, such as employee relations and community relations. Public relations work involves persuasive communication and advocacy, lobbying, source–media relations, reputation and relationship management and issues and crisis management. Public relations has a remit for corporate social responsibility through its issues management function and responsibility for reputation. Public relations supports organizational goals employing a range of interpersonal, online and off‐line targeted and mass communications, contributes to the facilitation of public conversations and debate on issues important to the organization and therefore may be seen as “discourse work.”
