Abstract: It is rare for a constitution to serve only one purpose, rather, any single constitution is more likely to serve multiple purposes. In which case, it is productive to read constitutions as incorporating a variety of ideal types. Departing from classical formulations, this chapter links constitutional ideal types to experiences in diverse parts of the world. By linking ideal types to particular cases, it becomes apparent that constitutional purposes often get frustrated, even distorted. The chapter takes no side in debates over which ideal types are best to be pursued. The aim, instead, is to map an evolving field that remains contentious as framers, citizens, and judges clash over constitutional ideals.
