Abstract: Emergency vehicle priority or emergency vehicle preemption (EVP) is a form of preferential treatment used to give emergency vehicles (EV) a priority green light at an intersection. The three critical goals of EVP operation are to reduce EV's response time, ensure the safety of EV as well as other vehicles on the road and minimize interruption to regular traffic on the road. This article presents a brief review of EVP systems deployed in practice as well as the state-of-the-art research on EVP operation. The article is concluded with few recommendations for future research directions to achieve practical deployment of state-of-the-art research.
