Title: High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) and High-Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes
Abstract: High-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes or carpool lanes, are example of managed lane facilities reserved for vehicles carrying more than two people, including the driver. The main objective of these lanes is to promote ridesharing and to eliminate congestion. HOV lanes are usually located on the left lanes on highways and are identified by signs along the road and painted diamond symbols on the pavement. This type of lane was first introduced in the United States in 1969 as a bus-only lane and now is being utilized in several countries around the world. The access to HOV lanes is sometimes granted to motorcycles, transit buses, and low emission cars regardless of the number of passengers. When the capacity of the HOV lane is excessive, the lane may be changed to high-occupancy toll (HOT) lane, which can be utilized by vehicles carrying one person for a fee, which may be variable during the time.
