Abstract: Corrosion can be identified through its appearance on corroded metallic surface. It may be localized to a certain area of may be distributed over the entire metallic surface. Obviously, uniform corrosion occurs uniformly throughout the metallic surface. Corrosion of a metallic surface in acidic solutions is a common example of uniform corrosion. Pitting, crevice, and intergranular corrosion which is also called as intergranular attack, intercrystalline corrosion is the common examples where corrosion occurs through pits, crevices, and grain boundaries, respectively. Galvanic corrosion occurs in a metallic couple of different electrochemical potential. Stress corrosion cracking is the cracking of metallic structures reinforced by a combined effect of corrosive environment and tensile stress. Each form of corrosion occurs in specific set of condition and requires a specific set of corrosion monitoring practices.
