Abstract: This chapter explores my relationship with Democratic Education. I recognise that as I had positioned myself as being too radical for Progressive Education, I wondered if Democratic Education could be my Ideal School? My journey took me to explore places that focussed on freedom, intrinsic motivation and autonomous learning which I hoped I would find in Democratic Education. This chapter explores the history and most well-known approaches to Democratic Education; Summerhill, Sudbury and Hecht's (2010) work in Israel. It looks at the role of the adult, rule-making and gives examples of school meetings that I have attended. I then share two examples of Democratic Education that I see as gems as one includes a different approach to decision making (sociocracy) and another focuses on social justice. It finishes with an introduction to unschooling, or autonomous home education, as an example of how these approaches could work in a home setting.
