Title: Panel Data, Multinational Enterprises and Direct Investment
Abstract: Interest in multinational enterprises and direct investment has a long tradition among economists. The past two decades have brought substantial changes in the world economic system. In particular, multinational firms have known development without precedents. Theoreticians and empiricists alike have modified their methods of analysis in an effort to stay abreast of all these changes. Theoreticians, for example, have constructed more elaborate models where trade barriers, sunk costs, production factor costs and market imperfections are present to analyse the development of multinational firms and growth of direct investments between countries. Empiricists have resorted to more powerful econometric tools and to data sets far larger than those available to their predecessors. The use of panel data is among the most important improvements achieved. It has permitted to provide a better evaluation of theoretical assumptions, particularly, the effects of firm specific advantages as well as country specific ones on the presence of multinational enterprises and realization of direct investments.
