Title: Urban Transportation Patterns and Solution Approaches to Achieve a Sustainable Transportation System in Ankara
Abstract: There has been an extremely rapid increase in car traffic in major cities, leading to car dependence and its adverse affects all over the world. The shift of a large number of people from the central areas gave rise to the formation of a low density type of settlement at the periphery. These low density neighborhoods without sufficient public transportation services led to captive car users. In this study, the urban transportation in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, is analyzed in order to explore the opportunities to achieve a more sustainable and efficient network of urban transportation. The applicability of different urban transportation and land use policies and car travel reduction options worldwide and their possible conflicts with the recent urban transportation policies are discussed. This research concludes that urban transportation problems in Ankara may be solved by the comprehensive implementation of far sighted urban planning together with public transport promotion and car use restrictions. This paper would be of specific interest to transportation planners and practitioners in areas comparable to Ankara, where the increasing number of private trips is changing the mobility and accessibility of their urban centers.
