Abstract: The article identifies the biggest challenges for the railroads in 2005, with traffic volume and revenues continuing to grow, as follows: fluidity, velocity, capacity, and consistency. A spokesperson for the North America's freight railroads assured Railway Age that the industry is prepared to handle the expected upward trend in traffic growth and revenues. Railway Age contacted the industry's chief executive for their perspective on the industry's readiness to enter into the rail reneissance a quarter century after deregulation. Optimism and strong belief in the industry's preparedness was evident in the comments of the following six industry CEOs: Norfolk Southern; Burlington Northern and Santa Fe; Union Pacific; CSX Transportation; CN; and Kansas City Southern.
