Abstract: In this paper, we study the flooding operation in low-duty-cycle wireless sensor networks. We thoroughly investigate how the flooding behaviors are fundamentally affected from theory to practice in low-duty-cycle sensor networks. We first study how practical factors like cycle length and link loss impact on the flooding delay that can be achieved. We mathematically quantify the performance deterioration caused by those factors and present initial learning in achieving efficient flooding against them. Based on our understanding in the flooding in low-duty-cycle wireless sensor networks, we further propose a new flooding protocol that approaches the optimal results and outperforms existing flooding protocols in terms of delay and energy consumption.
