Title: Influence of inoculum densities of Meloidogyne spp. and host plant age on the mass production of Pasteuria penetrans.
Abstract: The mass production of Pasteuria penetrans in 15, 30, 45 or 60 days-old tomato plants 'Santa Clara' inoculated with 5,000, 15,000 or 25,000 second-stage juveniles (J 2 ) of Meloidogyne spp. infected with three to twelve endospores per nematode was evaluated. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions with eight replicates in a completely randomized design, evaluated 50 days after the inoculation, and was repeated once. The fresh root weight, gall number, dry root weight and number of endospores produced per root system were determined. Higher fresh and dry root weights were observed in the 15-60 days-old plants or in the higher concentrations of nematodes. Fifteen days-old plants inoculated with 15,000 or 25,000 J 2 had lower fresh and dry root weight. As the Mehidogyne spp. inoculum level went from 5,000 to 25,000 J,, there was an increase in the gall numbers for 30, 45 and 60 days-old plants, however, a low gall number was observed in the 15 day-old plants inoculated with 25,000 J 2 . The 30 and 45 days-old plants inoculated with 25,000 J 2 , provided P. penetrans multiplication up to 19 times higher than plants inoculated with 5,000 J 2 in first experimental trial.
