EnglishThe number of Aquitaine's saints worshipped elsewhere, particularly in northern and eastern Gaul, bears witness to their huge reputation, comparable to that of Irish saints. In order to reappraise a series of hagiographical issues and ultimately understand the significance of such a high reputation, a two-day study meeting was organized in Poitiers. This paper offers the results and research lines that emerged from that meeting. After reviewing the definition of Aquitaine by ancient and medieval writers (Cecile Treffort), the discussion moved on to deal with the problem of hagiographical models and the development of the Aquitaine topos in this body of writing (Anne-Marie Helvetius, Alain DieIkens, Isabelle Westeel, Philippe George, Klaus Kronert). A tendency was identified towards hagiographical derivations and clusters -either because of liaisons of some spiritual children with the major saints or as a result of the discovery of family relations among them (contributions by Anne Wagner and Alain Dierkens). Among the original saints from Aquitaine there are also a number of martyrs, i.e. victims of false charges or outrageous interests (Emmeran, presented by Thierry Lesieur; Sauve de Valenciennes, presented by A.-M. Helvetius, Bertaire and Atalene, presented by A. Wagner). A special emphasis was laid too on the influence of the Irish model on hagiographies of Aquitaine-born saints (Jean-Michel Picard) as well as on the double adscription of certain saints (Erhard, bishop of Ratisbon, presented by Michele Gaillard). Other topics addressed in the course of the meeting were the case of such saints from Aquitaine as carne to be worshipped in the south, like for example Saint Alleaume (presented by Angeles Garcia de la Borbolla) and the nearly saintly figure of Waltharius, the hero of a Latin epic narrative who retires to the monastery of Novalesa and becomes its protector (Edina Bozoky).
