Abstract: 'Informed consent' denotes a person's autonomous agreement to a proposed course of action, usually in a treatment or research context. The principle that research requires the informed consent of participants is accepted around the world. Elements necessary for consent to be informed include disclosure of relevant information, adequate decision-making capacity, and absence of coercion or undue influence. Challenging issues characteristic of social and behavioral research include use of deception; necessity of consent for record-based research; informed consent in observational research and fieldwork, and for Internet-based research; and role of community consent.
