Abstract: Unconscious perception paradigms examine effects of stimuli that cannot be consciously represented. Longstanding methodological problems in differentiating conscious versus unconscious perceptual processes are discussed, and how such difficulties derive from fundamental theoretical issues is explained. Current unconscious perception models are described, and their methodological and theoretical implications are discussed. Further unresolved issues and ongoing controversies are delineated.
