Title: GEOECOLOGY: THEORY AND SOME PRACTICAL ISSUES
Abstract: An important new research direction, geoecology, is surveyed, as are some of the practical issues it addresses. Geoecology's place within the “socioecological” disciplines is outlined first, followed by a description of some of its principal practical objectives: e.g., rational siting of production facilities, comprehensive study and evaluation of environmental impacts of major development projects, improved environmental management at the regional level. The paper closes with a discussion of problems in establishing regional-level units of Goskompriroda for monitoring and enforcing environmental protection standards and of efforts to incorporate geoecology more fully into curricula for the training of environmental specialists (translated by Jay K. Mitchell, PlanEcon, Inc., Washington, DC 20005).
