Title: Gendering the Canon: A Feminist Reading of Indian English Women’s Detective Fiction
Abstract: As a genre, crime fiction holds the promise of thrill and suspense for its readers and hence has always enjoyed immense popularity. Globally, crime fiction sales have been high, and the number of cinematic and TV series adaptations only bear testimony to its demand. In the twenty-first century Indian literary scene, authors in English have been influenced by global trends and taken to the genre with great energy. Within this cohort, one can see an increasing presence of women authors who employ female fictional detectives to investigate crimes against women. The present paper will study two such detective novels to see how the generic conventions are modified to accommodate a female detective, working in the Indian context. The paper also discusses how these detective characters represent the independent twenty-first century Indian woman, an aspirational figure, and connects this to a globalized India’s economic growth and changes in India’s publishing industry.
