Title: Generative Design: A New Intelligent Design & Manufacturing Approach
Abstract: The paper proposed a generative CAD-based design search technique. It is mostly suitable for multi-criteria complex design problems where important performance criteria are very hard to compute. The method includes design genotype building based on a history-based parametric CAD system and then, randomly varying its parameters within pre-defined limits so that it could generate a set of distinct designs. Filtering of the designs that were generated is then carried out through various constraint envelopes which are representing geometric viability, manufacturability, cost, and other performance-related constraints, ultimately reducing the vast design space into a smaller viable design space represented by a set of distinct designs. These designs are available to the designer for further development. The proposed method reduces the complexity of the designer for the creative design search process. It maintains the flexibility and smoothness of the designer's work process. It canbe easily integrated with the conventional CAD-based design process framework. work seamlessly with conventional CAD-based design practices from early conceptual to detailed design. Again, the paper describes the steps involved in generative design process implementation with examples.
