Abstract: Evidentials in numerous languages are claimed to be epistemic modals. Lee (2011) also claims that the Korean suffix -te is an epistemic modal of necessity as well as an evidential. This paper examines Lee's (2011) definitions of -te and suffixes like -ess and -keyss, showing that her modal analysis cannot provide a full picture of Korean evidentials. Especially, it shows that direct evidential sentences, like simple non-evidential declarative ones, should not be treated as modalized. Then the paper discusses the issue concerning the epistemic modal analysis of evidentiality in terms of a typology of evidentiality—true evidentiality and quasi-evidentiality.
