Title: SEMI-PUBLIC TRANSPORT: THE EUROPEAN APPROACH: "PARATRANSIT"
Abstract: After a definition of paratransit, an overall view of paratransit in Europe is presented. The author studies the needs which can be fulfilled by semi-public transport (local needs, mobility of labour, clients), the organization of paratransit, its place in the transport system, administrative framework and financial aspects, and the various technical formulae possible in rural areas (shared taxis, community buses, mixed formulae) and in urban areas, (dial-a-ride bus-type of transport, minibus, car pooling). Paratransit has an assured future, and it is suggested that long-term research and short-term experiments on an international basis should be undertaken. (TRRL)
