Title: Interdisciplinary Theoretical Connections Final Project
Abstract: Teaching at a liberal arts institution and being committed to the mission of such an institution, I regularly think about how to make interdisciplinary connections in my courses. In fact, the general education program at my institution is designed to expose students to a broad range of disciplinary perspectives so that they can appreciate a multiplicity of views and are able to think from a broad range of vantage points. More specifically, our departmental capstone courses are required to have an interdisciplinary component. While SO 387 (Sociological Theory) is not the capstone experience in the Sociology Department, it is often taken in the same academic year as the departmental capstone experience. In an effort to strengthen the ability to make interdisciplinary connections, I have developed the final research paper in SO 387 to have an interdisciplinary component. The core topic of the final research paper must be rooted in an idea or piece of information or data that the student was introduced to in a non-sociology course. They must take that idea, information, or data and theoretically analyze it using a sociological theory that was reviewed in SO 387. Ultimately, students must develop knowledge of a sociological theory, synthesize information related to that theory, and apply that theory to a topic or issue that they were not initially exposed to through a sociological lens. The goals of this assignment are to assist in the students’ educational growth through requiring them to engage in and demonstrate different levels of learning (knowledge, synthesis, and application) and aid in their appreciation of the importance of an interdisciplinary approach.
