Abstract: La « divine surprise » des expérimentateursAu début de la crise sanitaire en 2020, des mots tels qu'« expérimentation » ou « expérimenter » ont été parmi les plus fréquemment utilisés pour essayer de saisir le sens des événements et pour envisager des réactions possibles.Ainsi, des représentants de la start-up nation et des spécialistes du management et de la gestion ont pondu nombre d'invitations et de diagnostics, souvent optimistes ou même jubilatoires, portant sur l'expérimentation d'une « Covid-economy » 1 déterminée par la distanciation sociale et l'enseignement à distance 2 , sur la possibilité pour les villes d'expérimenter un nouveau rapport à la ville et à la mobilité 3 , ou encore sur les chances offertes à l'expérimentation des outils numériques dans les métiers de la culture 4 .De l'enseignement au tourisme, du travail à la santé, l'épidémie semble avoir déverrouillé toutes les sphères de la société, en restituant aux acteurs situés l'initiative et la responsabilité, en les forçant à « réfléchir ensemble » 5 et à s'écarter des sentiers battus.Pourtant, le vocabulaire de l'expérimentation peut résonner d'une manière plus inquiétante, pour peu qu'on se rappelle qu'une expérimentation peut impliquer une différence très marquée entre les positions active et passive -entre l'action de l'expérimentateur, d'une part, et, de l'autre, le matériau « expérimentable », voire les cobayes.C'est ce que suggère le sociologue Marco d'Eramo, toujours à propos de la crise sanitaire, en définissant le confinement mondial comme « une expérience inédite de disciplinement social » 6 .Nous estimons que ce double visage du mot « expérimentation » -incitation à l'initiative ou à l'auto-organisation locale et manipulation illimitée d'objets inertes -ne se révèle à l'occasion de la crise épidémique que parce qu'il était déjà implicite dans un
