Title: Fijn bederf. Over Jacob Israël de Haan en het Kwaad
Abstract: In hoeverre Gerard Reve vertrouwd was met het werk van Jacob Israel de Haan kon ik tot nu toe bij gebrek aan documentatie niet achterhalen. Dat hij er in geinteresseerd was, kan blijken uit het feit dat hij bij zijn uitgever Van Oorschot tot twee maal toe De Haans Verzamelde gedichten bestelde. Hoewel expliciete getuigenissen ontbreken, lijkt het me duidelijk genoeg dat er sprake is van verwantschap, als het al geen herkenning moet heten. Bij de veronderstelde affiniteit heb ik niet eens het oog op het feit dat beide schrijvers belijdende en praktiserende homoseksuelen waren (iets wat voor De Haan nog opmerkelijker was dan voor Reve, gegeven het homofobe klimaat anno 1900). Ook hun al dan niet gefictionaliseerde voorliefde voor jonge knapen in matrozenpakjes, hoe karakteristiek en grappig ook, beschouw ik als bijkomstig. Veel sterker word ik getroffen door de parallellen in hun beider opvattingen over God en geloof, “de uiteindelijke dingen” om met Reve te spreken, hun ideeen over goed en kwaad, over liefde, seks en erotiek.
