Title: Genetic diversity analysis of chilli genotypes based on qualitative morphological traits
Abstract: Forty three chilli genotypes of Indian and foreign origin were analyzed for genetic diversity by using 21 morphological descriptors. The genetic diversity was not observed for seedling anthocyanin coloration, petal color, plant height and spread. The diversity index was high for anther color (1.25), fruit stalk length (1.07) and fruit texture (0.94). The lowest diversity index was recorded for leaf pubescence (0.25), fruit bearing habit and fruit diameter (0.31). based on 21 qualitative morphological traits, the first major cluster consists of 39 genotypes and the second minor cluster is group of 4 genotypes that were categorized by gathering genotypes with erect fruit orientation and fruit bearing habit. The most divergent genotypes were SL 466 and VR 521, while closest one was Punjab Sindhuri and VR 522. The clustering of genotypes was on the basis of the geographical origin. based on the diversity analysis the identified superior genotypes used for development of improved cultivars.
