Title: ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF CASSAVA PROCESSING IN OBAFEMI OWODE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OGUN STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract: The main objective of this study was to assess the level of performance of cassava processors (gari producers) in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 105 gari producers in the study area. Primary data were obtained with the use of structured questionnaire. Descriptive, Quantitative and Multiple regression analytical tools were used to analyse the data obtained. The study showed that majority (87.6%) of the respondents are female, who have formal education (60%) and are married (92.4%) with a mean age of 44.77 years. The study further revealed an average gross margin of N 12,460 and net farm income of N 3,190 for a cassava processor per week. The result of the regression analysis showed that increase in quantity processed increases revenue (?=0.01) and female producers have higher revenue (?=0.01). Producers who source cassava from their personal farms also have higher revenue while increase in the years of production does not necessarily translate into increase in revenue. This study concludes that sex and age of cassava processors as well as the quantity of cassava processed and the source of cassava are the socio-economic factors affecting output. This study recommends that cassava processors could increase the quantity of cassava processed by way of cultivating a cassava farm of their own.
