The initiative recognizes that over 20 years after Somalis first fled the civil war, over two million Somalis remain displaced inside and outside the country. GISR has initiated international dialogue in a search for innovative solutions. One dimension that has emerged repeatedly in high-level consultations has been the importance of engaging the global Somali diaspora in the search for solutions. This paper synthesizes what is known from the literature regarding best practices for diaspora populations assisting refugees remaining in the region of origin. It adds to this literature by reporting new findings from focus groups with Somali diaspora populations in Europe and North America regarding possible modes of support from diaspora populations to Somali refugees who remain in East Africa. It concludes with an update on the latest developments in the Global Initiative on Somali Refugees.Read More
