Abstract: The article analyses trends of economic cooperation between the member-states of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during more the fifty years of its history. The specificity of dialogue on economic issues between ASEAN countries at different stages of its evolution is revealed, the degree of success regarding the ASEAN-led multilateral projects is traced, the role of ASEAN partners is specified. In the author's view, at all its stages ASEAN's policy aimed to foster economic exchanges in Southeast Asia has been and remains dependent upon the external factor. At present, this dependence stems from China, and for the Association, to coordinate its prospective plans with China becomes increasingly difficult.
