Title: Zhang Zhidong and the Development of Tea Industry in Hunan and Hubei Provinces in the Late Qing Dynasty
Abstract: Hunan and Hubei provinces were important tea-producing areas in modern China, Hankou being an important tea port in the late Qing Dynasty. Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Huguang Province from 1889 to 1907, attached importance to the development of tea industry during this period. Zhang Zhidong’s thought and practice in developing modern tea industry in Hunan and Hubei, whether the improvement on tea planting and processing within the traditional framework, his response to new era and new trade environment, or his direct involvement in tea foreign affairs and administration, all reflected a provincial governor’s thinking and exploration in the changing times, which is still of certain significance today.
