The aim of this paper is a detailed description of the most common toxins of poisonous marine organisms with described cases worldwide, in order to inform the public about the dangers and risks of contaminated seafood. Poisoning is the result of ingestion of contaminated shellfish and fish from commercial sources or recreational collection. This paper describes poisons found in European area with an emphasis on the Mediterranean Sea and elsewhere in the world. Saxitoxins (STX), tetrodotoxins (TTX), domoic acid (DA) and analogs, okadaic acid (OA) and derivatives, yessotoxins (YTX), azaspiric acid (AZA), pectenotoxins (PTX), cyclic imines, palytoxin (PLTX) and analogs, ciguatoxins (CTX), maitotoxins (MTX) and brevetoxins (PbTx) have been described. Toxokinetics, toxicity mechanism, experimental toxicity, clinical signs, treatment, analytical methods and permissible concentrations were explained for each of the above.Read More
