Abstract: This research is a study of the role of Arabic, Bugis culture and tafsir literature in the development of Islamic culture in Bugis society. The role can be seen by identifying some Arabic vocabularies used in Bugis language. Arabic, is rich in vocabulary and has great literacy, is the language used in the Qur’an and Hadith as the primary source of Islamic teachings. The spread of Islam to various regions, especially in South Sulawesi, makes the people know about Arabic. Bugis people adapt many Arabic and Islamic terms into their language. The spread of Islam in Sulawesi brings influence on Bugis-Makassar culture. The implementation of Sara’ in Pangadereng system as a system of life for the Bugis community has greatly influenced the development of Islamic culture for Bugis people. This is what is known as al-’urf as one of the considerations for the formation of Islamic law. Furthermore, the Qur’an translation and tafsir in Bugis language used Lontarak as the medium of explanation. Although Islam does not refer to Bugis as Islam does not refer to Arab, Islam and Bugis have many similarities that make it easily accepted by Bugis people.
