Title: Participation bias, self-selection bias, and response bias
Abstract: A participation bias, also referred to as a nonresponse bias, is a common source of error in clinical trials and survey studies. A data set may be skewed because participants disproportionately possess certain traits that affect participation, attrition, or outcomes. The resulting sample is not truly representative of the population as a whole, and the results cannot be generalized. A self-selection bias is a related type of bias in which individuals disproportionately select themselves into a group.
