Title: Design activities in coal industry under Soviet rule
Abstract: This paper discusses development of the Soviet coal industry from 1922 to 1982. The evaluation concentrates on coal mining development since 1950. The following stages in development of coal mining are characterized: from 1950 to 1965, from 1965 to 1970 and since 1970. Methods of coal mine construction and coal mining used in three development periods are comparatively evaluated: systems of coal deposit exploration, deposit opening and development, mine construction, shaft sinking, mining systems, use of longwall mining and long pillar mining, decreasing role of stowing for strata control and increasing role of mining with caving, development of coal cutter loaders and locomotive haulage, optimizing coal mine output in underground coal mines and in surface mines, system for automatic control of coal mining and coal preparation. Organizational models of coal industry and research programs on coal mining and coal preparation are also discussed. Research institutes which coordinate research and development in the following areas are listed: surface coal mining, safety, coal mine construction, mining under conditions of extreme climatic conditions, development of new coal deposits, automatic control systems in coal mining. Development plans of the Soviet coal industry from 1981 to 1985 are presented: increase of coal output by 92.8 Mt/a, of this amount 65 Mt/a will come from new coal mines.
