EnglishThe animal world has always held an important place in the literary genre of the fantastic. The aim of this essay is to explore the role and the representation of animal characters in some selected short stories written by Luciano Lamberti, Solange Rodriguez Pappe, Samanta Schweblin and Federico Falco. Animal characters, depicted as bio-political monsters and representations of ‘dispensable life’, encounter human beings; this allows the merging between the two species’ boundaries, and the opening of new and blending imaginaries. By the means of the fantastic and horror literature, these textual examples picture unusual ‘alliances’ between human beings and animals that overturn anthropocentric hierarchies, as well as animal transformations, which unveil the human being’s inner animality.
