Abstract: Breathlessness in pregnancy is a very common symptom. We discuss in this review, the physiological changes to the respiratory system in pregnancy and the commonly seen respiratory ailments like asthma, pneumonia and tuberculosis. Treatments for most conditions are similar to those administered to non-pregnant women. However, conditions may sometimes deteriorate rapidly in pregnancy and hence prompt recognition and treatment is crucial.Investigations should be appropriately used and should not be withheld in pregnancy if indicated.The effect of each condition on pregnancy, of pregnancy on the condition, treatments that can be safely used, management in pregnancy and in labour, and effects on the fetus and the neonate are discussed.
