Abstract: To achieve a complete decarbonisation of the global energy system, an energy mix based on different renewable sources, an effective large-scale energy storage system and a certain flexibility and simplicity of use of energy in its various forms for final applications are essential. Power to fuel is widely recognised as a promising path towards a fossil-free society. In the present chapter, we tried to give a rough idea of the potential penetration of power to fuel in the market, from a perspective of complete replacement of fossil fuels with hydrogen and/or synthetic carbon-neutral fuels. Starting from an analysis of world energy consumption, the potential global demand for hydrogen and other synthetic renewable fuels necessary for a complete energy transition was calculated, with a focus on their application in various sectors, such as industrial, transport, building and electricity generation sectors.
