Title: Artificial Lighting Technologies for Agricultural Production
Abstract: The sun has been the sole source of light for plant production for millennia. Technological advancements and changes in growth strategies have made artificial lighting an important part of controlled environment production as both sole and supplemental sources of light. More recently, light-emitting diodes have come to the forefront of artificial lighting technologies in part due to their low energy usage compared to traditional sources such as high-pressure sodium lamps. Furthermore, light-emitting diodes have the ability to administer wavelength specific light and have a low heat-emitting light face ideal for close proximity lighting. This chapter focuses on light-emitting diodes and their emergence as a viable option for artificial lighting applications. We will first discuss the current lighting options which are used in both sole and supplemental lighting systems. The current literature related to wavelength specific lighting and its effect on plant morphology and physiology will be discussed with respect to light-emitting diodes. Finally, the use of wavelength specific light-emitting diodes as a viable replacement for traditional artificial lighting will be discussed for both plants and animals.
